11:51 am - My Equipment
I made this for my website, I figured I'd publish it here as well. It's not complete but it's a good start.

My Camera: the Canon 5d

Canon 5d When I purchased the 5d, I had previously owned three film cameras and four digital cameras. My previous camera had been the excellent Canon 20d, but I was wanting the improved low-light abilities of the 5d, along with the greater variation in ISO selection and numerosu other small improvements.

The Canon 5d has exceed all my expectations, I must say am thrilled with it. It feels wonderul in my hand, with a comfortable heft that is just right. The battery life is exceptional, the viewfinder bright, the controls instinctive. I never feel the camera is getting in my way, which is what has caused me to upgrade every time in the past. At the point where I feel I am fighting against the limitations of my equipment, it is time to upgrade. So far, the 5d has been a willing and capable partner in all my photographic endeavors. And the quality is bloody outsanding. Top notch. I HIGHLY recommend this camera.

Wide Angle Lens: the Canon 17-40mm F/4.0 L

Canon 17-40mm F/4.0L I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this lens, and for the price it can't be beat. Excellent color satuation, tack sharp, you can't go wrong with this lens. I used this as my general purpose lens when I had the Canon 20d (it's 1.6x crop factor made this lens more like a 28-64mm), but on the 5d it's a true wide-angle. I love using this lens for shooting interiors and landscapes. I find it particularly suited for landscapes, as I seldom want a shallow depth of field. It was also my first L lens, and it's spoiled me rotten.

Telephoto Zoom Lens: the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS

Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS Wow, what a lens this is. As I write this I have only had it a couple months, but I am constantly impressed with the results I can get from this high-end glass. The bokeh is silky smooth, the color is true and saturated, and between the 2.8 speed and the image stabilization, it is VERY versatile. There are lots of positive reviews on the net of this lens, but I want to point out something I have not seen others talk about. This lens is an incredibly kind lens when it comes to photographing people. I say it's kind because for a given subject, the image coming out of this lens is more flattering than one from a similar lens. As good as you look, it will make you look better. I haven't been able to pinpoint what technological factors are at work here, but I can see why people rave about this lens for portraits and weddings, this baby was MADE to shoot people.

It was a difficult decision deciding between this and the excellent Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L, but in the end a few factors finally recommended this lens to me. One, I like to shoot in low light, and I knew that I would definitely take advantage of having a faster lens (2.8 vs. 4.0). Second, the image stabilization would further enhance my ability to work in low light, and reduce the need for a tripod. Third, the 2.8 f-stop makes it well suited for portraiture, something I am focusing upon more and more. You just can't get that amazing background blur with a 4.0.

This lens is a healthy chunk of change, no doubt, but in my opinion it is worth it.

Selective Focus Lens: the Lensbaby 3G

Lensbaby 3GThe Lensbaby 3G is a unique product. At the center of this lens is a bellows that allows you to twist and bend where the lens is aiming. Moving the focal point of the lens off-center creates a lovely blur effect moving away from the area of focus. Examples can be seen here, here, and here. When I get stuck in a rut, this is the lens I break out to shake the neurons loose. It also makes a great portrait lens, with its soft-focus effect.

Accessories

Opteka Remote Release Cord for Canon EOS 5D

A remote release is essential for working in low light situations. Even with your camera on a tripod, manually pressing the shutter button to take a photo shakes the camera and leads to reduced sharpness and blur. Using a remote release, you can trigger the camera without touching it, for much sharper photos.

Canon Spare Battery - BP511A 1390mAh Lithium

Everybody needs a spare battery. You do too.

77mm Circular Polarizer

Use a Circular Polarizer to control reflections when shooting outdoors. Cancel out reflections on glass and water, deepen the color of vegetation, add contrast and depth to skies. A must if you are shooting outdoors.

02:26 pm - So, so far behind in posting
I have photos dating back to 2/23/08 that have been sitting on the server, uploaded, just waiting to be posted.  Since then I've uploaded six more directories of ready photos, and posted almost none of them.

I really can't figure out how I am going to get caught up except to make a photo flood, but I am concerned that will piss folks off. Even if I do use cut tags, I figure it's at least 10 posts worth of stuff.

So now what?

09:13 am - Holy Crap!
Look at the size of that monster!

Surely it's price is a reasonable "first born child" or so.

[EDIT]
"It has been announced by Canon, that this lens will be released in May 2008, at a MSRP of $11,999.00 US funds."

06:39 pm - Dang it
For all my attempted organization, I still lost a photo.

I was going to add this one to my website, only to realize I no longer have the original.

Where'd it go?

04:53 pm - First photos from the new lens
As seen in the cellphone-post below, I got a new lens, a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

I shot these at lunchtime, I only had a few minutes. I am posting larger-than-usual photos, 683x1024, just because I feel like it. :P Click the thumbnail to view large pic.

04:17 pm - I've had the lensbaby on the camera
The blurred focal effect can be interpreted as a visual representation of the way we direct our consciousness onto one thing to the exclusion of all else. I don't mean this negatively, like tunnel vision... more like when you are paying close attention to something. When something intrigues you, or when something moves out of the corner of your eye and you turn to look for it, or when searching the eyes of someone for answers. Perhaps you are looking into the eyes of someone you love, or searching the dark for the source of the noise. Or both.

Lots of lensbaby pics to come.

01:22 pm - Lax, lax, so very lax
I have so many photos done that I haven't posted. Images from the circus series, images from last weekend, images from the weekend before that, etc. Not sure why I am falling behind like this, but I'll try to post something, even if it's one huge "here's everything I've got right now" post.

09:44 am - Closer-than-usual macro photography
One of my lenses is a macro lens. That means it has the ability to get close to objects and still be able to focus when zoomed in, thus letting me capture small objects in great detail. But what if you wanted to get even closer?

One solution is to move the lens further from the camera. Extension tubes are one way to do that. A bellows is another way. B&H Photo sells a bellows meant to attach to modern day Canon EOS cameras:

The cost? A mere $800.

On ebay however, you can get a similar device for somewhat less.

This unit costs about $40. The tradeoff is somewhat less rigidity and build quality, and no automatic focusing. You can see the expensive model has pins that make the cameras auto focus work. The cheaper version doesn't have that. For $760, I'll happily focus by hand! Anyway, I asked for one of these for my birthday, and Melanie got it for me.

The cons: It's a gangly beast to work with. You will need a tripod, because the tiniest motion is amplified when the end of the lens is over a foot away from your camera. You will want to use the timer, or better yet a cable release, to avoid moving the camera. And frankly, I think even mirror movement was a problem (in an SLR camera, when you press the button to take a photo, the mirror must move up out of the way, and this can produce a tiny bit of shake, enough to jiggle the lens). I will probably use mirror lockup next time. And it's hard to aim, due to it flexing somewhat.

The pros: The results can be quite worth it.

More to come.

10:45 pm - the parking lot of Daddy-O's Grocery
I passed the place on my drive in. I liked the name. :) The grocery itself appeared closed/abandoned, but the building wasn't that interesting to photograph. The parking lot held a couple treasures though.

10:16 pm - I've not been big on the words lately.
Just haven't felt like saying much I guess. I start typing, then stare at what I've written, and go "who cares?", erase it and post some photos instead. Priorities and all.

I think I posted too many people shots this last time. I got the idea to post all the ones I thought came out of each person. It now occurs to me though that if you don't know the people, those posts are of limited interest. I could probably have whittled it down to just my favorites and saved everyone some bandwidth. Hmm. Maybe a repost, under a cut tag.

I have some new stuff to post, from yesterday's trip to the Guest River Gorge. That isn't where I intended to go, and I was writing out the story of that, but the who cares kicked in and I wrote this instead. I am forcing myself not to delete this too. Anyway, on to the photos.
